Charles Fernyhough


I am a research psychologist and writer of fiction and non-fiction.

From a psychologist’s perspective, rest is a conundrum. The brain that underlies a resting mind is anything but still, and there are ongoing debates about whether the stream of consciousness is ever actually silent. I’m excited about the opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration among psychologists, neuroscientists and researchers from the humanities and creative arts. I believe that the arts and humanities can really enrich the scientific study of human experience, in part by giving us clues about how to integrate the subjective experience of a person with our ‘objective’ knowledge about their brain’s activity. I’m looking forward to seeing this kind of interdisciplinary enquiry flourishing in the unique space of the Hub
